Identification points

  • Two barbels on each side of the upper jaw.
  • Large bronze to olive scales with a heavy body.
  • Long dorsal fin and downward-facing mouth.

Habitat

Lakes, canals, ponds, slow rivers, and warm lowland waters with soft bottoms.

Bait notes

Corn, dough bait, boilies, bread, worms, and pack bait are common.

Behavior

Feeds by rooting through sediment for insects, plants, seeds, and small invertebrates.

Caution

In some regions carp are native, stocked, invasive, or regulated differently.
