Blue-spotted Sunfish

Enneacanthus gloriosus

Blue-spotted Sunfish is a small, secretive centrarchid of quiet, heavily vegetated waters in the southeastern United States. It forages on tiny aquatic invertebrates and usually stays close to cover; reports outside its native range should be treated cautiously because occurrence records can include misidentifications or introductions.

Tunnistuspisteet

  • Distinct blue spots on the body and fins, usually with a pale bluish overall cast
  • Deep, laterally compressed sunfish body with a small mouth
  • Dark vertical bars/blotches on the sides, often over an olive to brown background

Habitat

Warm, slow-moving blackwater creeks, swamps, oxbows, backwaters, and vegetated margins of ponds and small lakes, especially where submerged plants, root tangles, and debris provide cover; typically in low-gradient coastal plain systems in the southeastern U.S.

Syötti muistiinpanoja

Tiny live worms, bloodworms, small crickets, and insect larvae can work well; very small soft plastics, micro jigs, and flies tied to imitate midges or small aquatic insects are practical. Downsize everything and fish it near cover.

Käyttäytyminen

Secretive and cover-oriented, often hovering near plants or woody debris and picking off small insects, crustaceans, and other invertebrates. It is most active in calm, sheltered water and is not a hard-charging open-water feeder.

Varoitus

Handle carefully because small sunfish can have sharp spines on the dorsal and anal fins. Confirm local regulations before keeping fish, and avoid consuming if the waterbody has contamination advisories.

Kalastus muistiinpanoja

Use ultralight tackle, small hooks, and light line in shallow vegetated margins. Present baits slowly beside weed edges, roots, and laydowns; float rigs and micro-fly presentations are effective. It is generally a novelty/small-panfish species rather than a primary sport target.
