Reeftop Pipefish

Corythoichthys haematopterus

Reeftop pipefish is a slender reef-associated pipefish found in shallow tropical Indo-Pacific waters, often hovering among branching corals and seagrass. It is a small, non-target fish rarely taken by anglers, with limited species-specific fishing information.

Identification points

  • Very long, thin tubular snout and narrow pipe-like body
  • Bony ringed body with a straight or only slightly curved profile
  • Small fins set near the rear of the body and cryptic coral-colored/brown patterning

Habitat

Shallow coral reefs, reef flats, lagoons, and adjacent seagrass or macroalgae beds; usually holds close to branching coral and rubble in calm, clear tropical water.

Bait notes

Not a practical game fish. If collected for observation or bycatch studies, tiny live mysids, copepods, or very small crustacean imitations may elicit strikes; standard angling baits are generally ineffective.

Behavior

Slow-moving and cryptic, it uses camouflage to blend with coral and algae and feeds on tiny crustaceans and other zooplankton by suction. Often seen clinging or hovering vertically in low-current areas.

Caution

Handle carefully; like other pipefish, it is delicate and easily injured. It is not a food species and should not be targeted for consumption.

Fishing notes

Best approached with gentle fineness rather than active angling: a tiny hook, light leader, and near-motionless presentation in shallow reef structure. Most encounters are incidental while snorkeling or in bycatch, not deliberate fishing.
