Identification points

  • Deep, robust body with a strongly forked tail
  • Golden-yellow to brassy body with dark-edged scales and a more silvery belly
  • Large mouth with prominent canine-like teeth and often reddish-orange fins

Habitat

Fast-flowing rivers, confluences, eddies, seams, rapids, and deep pools in the Paraná, Paraguay, Uruguay, and connected basins; also floodplain edges and tributary mouths.

Bait notes

Live baitfish, large streamers, swimbaits, diving plugs, spoons, and topwater walkers/poppers are effective. Match local forage such as small characins; flashy, fast-moving presentations usually draw strikes.

Behavior

An opportunistic piscivore that strikes hard and often near the surface or midwater. It is most active in moving water, using current breaks to ambush baitfish, and may feed best during low light or when water is slightly stained.

Caution

It has sharp teeth and powerful jumps, so handle carefully with long pliers and avoid putting fingers near the mouth. Check local regulations and note that some fisheries practice catch-and-release for trophy dorado.

Fishing notes

Cast upstream or across current and work lures through seams, eddies, and foam lines with a fast retrieve and pauses. Use stout tackle and wire or heavy fluorocarbon leaders because of the species' sharp teeth and powerful runs.
