Red Lizardfish

Synodus synodus

Red lizardfish (Synodus synodus) is a bottom-dwelling marine predator of sandy and rubble bottoms, often lying partly buried and ambushing small fish and crustaceans. It is generally a bycatch rather than a primary target species.

Identification points

  • Long, slender lizard-like body with a pointed head
  • Large mouth lined with sharp, needlelike teeth
  • Mottled brownish to reddish coloration with a pale underside

Habitat

Shallow to moderately deep tropical and subtropical marine sand, shell, rubble, and reef-edge habitats; commonly rests on the bottom or in open patches near structure.

Bait notes

Takes small strips of fish, shrimp, squid, and tiny jigs or soft plastics worked near the bottom; as a bycatch, it is usually caught on light tackle while targeting other reef or flat species.

Behavior

A nocturnal ambush predator that stays motionless on the bottom by day and feeds on small fishes, shrimp, and other crustaceans, striking quickly when prey passes close.

Caution

Has sharp teeth and a mouthful of needlelike teeth can easily cut fingers or line; handle carefully with pliers. Not typically targeted for food, and local consumption rules may apply if caught as bycatch.

Fishing notes

Fish near the bottom with slow retrieves, short hops, or dead-sticks around sandy breaks, reef edges, and drop-offs. Use small hooks and light leaders; it often bites while stationary baits sit on the bottom.
