Shaw's Cowfish

Aracana aurita

Shaw's Cowfish (`Aracana aurita`) is a small Australian boxfish/cowfish with a rigid bony carapace and bold spotted patterning. It is not a common angling target; most records are from temperate coastal reefs and sandy areas in southern Australia.

Identification points

  • Rigid box-like body with armored plates rather than a flexible profile
  • Pale body covered in scattered bright blue spots
  • Short snout with a small terminal mouth and a tapered tail peduncle

Habitat

Temperate coastal waters of southern Australia, especially shallow reefs, seagrass beds, algal-covered sand, and sheltered coastal habitats near structure.

Bait notes

Rarely targeted by anglers. Small pieces of shrimp, squid, marine worms, or tiny bait on light tackle may take one incidentally; small soft plastics or micro-jigs near bottom structure can also hook it by chance.

Behavior

A slow-moving bottom-dweller that browses and picks at small benthic invertebrates, using its mouth close to the substrate. It relies on its rigid body armor and can be awkward to hook and land.

Caution

Like other cowfish/boxfish, it can release a toxin when stressed or dying; do not consume. Handle carefully and avoid keeping it crowded with other fish, since the toxin can affect aquarium or catch holds.

Fishing notes

Fish light tackle close to reef, weed edge, or sand pockets near structure, keeping presentations small and close to bottom. Handle gently with a wet hand or net, as the fish is delicate despite its armor.
