Spotfin Butterflyfish

Chaetodon ocellatus

Spotfin Butterflyfish (Chaetodon ocellatus) is a reef-associated butterflyfish found in the western Atlantic, especially the Caribbean and Florida. It feeds mainly on small benthic invertebrates and coral-associated organisms, and is more often observed by divers than targeted by anglers.

Not a standard game fish. If taken incidentally, tiny natural baits such as small shrimp bits, squid strips, or reef worms are more relevant than lures; hook size must be very small.

Typically occurs in pairs or small groups and picks at small invertebrates from reef surfaces and crevices. It is diurnal, wary, and closely tied to reef structure rather than open water.

Reef fish consumption caution applies in some areas due to possible ciguatera risk; check local advisories. Handle carefully with wet hands or a soft net, and avoid prolonged air exposure.

Best approached as a reef observing species rather than a target. It may peck at stationary baits presented very delicately near structure, but catch-and-release handling should be minimal because it is fragile.
