Grass Carp

Ctenopharyngodon idella

Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) is a large, fast-growing herbivorous cyprinid widely stocked and introduced outside its native East Asian range. It lives in warm lowland waters and is valued for weed control, though many populations are managed or prohibited as an invasive species.

Best known as a specialist target with corn, dough balls, bread, peas, lettuce, and artificial weed imitations or floating baits when legal; many anglers also use whole kernels or firm dough presentations for sight-fishing.

Primarily herbivorous, grazing heavily on aquatic vegetation and sometimes terrestrial plants hanging into the water. Usually wary in clear water, often cruising slowly along weed edges or under overhanging cover; large fish can be extremely powerful when hooked.

Check local regulations before targeting or transporting grass carp; many regions restrict possession, stocking, or release because they are invasive. Very large individuals can be difficult to land, so use gear strong enough for hard runs and heavy body weight.
