Точки идентификации

  • Long, slender silvery body with a deeply forked tail
  • Single short dorsal fin set far back on the body
  • Large mouth with a prominent lower jaw and pointed snout

среда обитания

Warm coastal waters of the western Atlantic, especially bays, estuaries, mangrove edges, tidal creeks, surf zones, and sandy or grassy nearshore shallows; juveniles commonly use low-salinity nursery areas.

Заметки о приманке

Small live mullet, pilchards, pinfish, shrimp, and finger mullet work well; cut bait also takes fish. Small silver spoons, soft plastics, epoxy jigs, and baitfish-profile flies are effective.

Поведение

Schooling, surface-oriented predator that feeds on small fish and shrimp. It is highly active in moving water, often chases bait near the surface, and frequently leaps when hooked.

Осторожность

Sharp gill covers can cut hands when handling; use a landing net or lip-grip carefully. Flesh is bony and generally poor eating, so it is usually released; check local regulations if targeting in protected nursery waters.

Рыболовные заметки

Target moving water, inlets, channels, and bait schools with fast retrieves or topwater presentations. Use light to medium tackle, expect long runs and jumps, and keep steady pressure to avoid slack line.
