Sailor's Choice

Haemulon parra

Sailor's Choice (Haemulon parra) is a small grunts species found on shallow Caribbean and western Atlantic reefs, sand flats, and seagrass edges. It schools during the day and feeds mostly at night on benthic invertebrates, making it a modest bycatch rather than a major gamefish.

Точки идентификации

  • Yellowish to silvery body with a pinkish cast and faint diagonal golden stripes
  • Small mouth with a slightly blunt snout and a steeply sloped forehead
  • Dark spot at the upper base of the pectoral fin, typical of Haemulon grunts

среда обитания

Shallow coral reefs, rocky bottoms, patch reefs, mangrove edges, and seagrass beds in warm coastal marine waters; often around structure in 1–30 m.

Заметки о приманке

Small pieces of shrimp, squid, cut bait, and fish strips work well; small jigs tipped with bait can also draw bites. Because it is a minor sport species, match small hooks and light terminal tackle.

Поведение

Schools tightly by day near bottom structure and becomes more active at dusk and night. It forages on worms, small crustaceans, mollusks, and other bottom-dwelling prey.

Осторожность

A reef-associated marine fish; ciguatera risk may apply in some tropical areas, so avoid eating large reef-caught individuals from risk zones. Handle dorsal spines carefully.

Рыболовные заметки

Fish near reef edges, pilings, and drop-offs with light spinning or bait rigs close to bottom. Best results usually come at dusk or after dark with a slow presentation and minimal weight.
