Identification points

  • Bright yellow body with a contrasting dark face mask
  • Thin dark vertical bars on the sides, typical of Chaetodon butterflyfish
  • Rounded fins and a small, disk-shaped body adapted to reef crevices

Habitat

Shallow coral and rocky reefs, lagoon edges, and surge zones, typically around coral heads and reef slopes in warm tropical marine waters of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

Bait notes

Not a targeted sport species and rarely taken by anglers. In captivity it may accept finely chopped marine foods, small crustaceans, and prepared sponge-based diets, but it is not a practical bait species.

Behavior

Usually seen in pairs or small groups, picking at coral polyps and other benthic invertebrates. It is diurnal, reef-faithful, and tends to stay close to structure rather than roaming far offshore.

Caution

Do not eat; this reef species is not a food target and may be subject to local collection or protection rules. Handle gently if incidentally caught, as butterflyfish are delicate and stress easily.

Fishing notes

If encountered while reef fishing, release immediately and avoid handling; it is not a game fish. Angling techniques are generally irrelevant, as the species is better observed than pursued.
