Estuary Cobbler

Identification points

  • Broad, flattened head with a wide mouth and prominent barbels
  • Smooth, scaleless catfish body with a mottled brown to grey pattern
  • Long dorsal fin and strong venomous pectoral spines

Habitat

Mud and sand bottoms in estuaries, tidal rivers, lagoon mouths, and sheltered coastal waters; often near snags, rock edges, drop-offs, and mangrove or seagrass margins.

Bait notes

Best on fresh baits such as prawns, squid strips, cut fish, mullet, or small crab pieces. Heavy-smelling baits work well at night and around slack tide.

Behavior

A nocturnal ambush feeder that rests on the bottom by day and forages at night. It uses sensitive barbels to locate prey and can handle brackish to fully marine water.

Caution

Venomous dorsal and pectoral spines can inflict very painful punctures; handle with extreme care and keep fingers clear of the spines. Notable for sharp spines rather than food-safety concerns.

Fishing notes

Fish the bottom with a sinker rig near deep holes, gutter mouths, snags, or channel edges. Use sturdy leader and long-handled dehooker; avoid lifting by the line because the spines are dangerous.
