Banded Kōkopu

Galaxias fasciatus

Banded kōkopu is a small native New Zealand galaxiid that lives in cool, shaded streams and migrates into riparian forest to breed on land after floods. It is not a common angling target and is best treated as a conservation-sensitive native fish.

Identification points

  • Small, slender galaxiid with a pale to olive-brown body and distinct dark vertical bands or saddles on the sides
  • No dorsal fin spines and a soft-rayed, salmon-like body shape typical of galaxiids
  • Mottled fins and a narrow head with a small terminal mouth; adults lack the barbel-like features of many introduced species

Habitat

Clear, cool lowland and hill-country streams with overhead cover, undercut banks, root tangles, submerged woody debris, and access to damp forest floor or leaf litter for egg deposition after floods.

Bait notes

Rarely targeted intentionally; if fishing is permitted, very small natural offerings such as earthworms, insect larvae, or tiny soft plastics/flies are the most relevant. Avoid heavy baiting or large lures, which are inappropriate for this small species.

Behavior

Nocturnal and cryptic, it feeds on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates and often holds tight to cover by day. Adults can move through wet terrestrial margins to spawn in moist leaf litter after freshwater flooding events.

Caution

Protected status and harvest rules vary by region in New Zealand; verify local regulations before targeting or retaining fish. Handle gently because the species is small and vulnerable to stress; release quickly if caught incidentally.

Fishing notes

Use ultra-light fly or spin tackle in shallow, shaded stream margins and work small presentations slowly near cover. Handle carefully, minimize air exposure, and check local rules because native galaxiids are often protected or subject to strict harvest limits.
