Barrier Reef Anemonefish

Amphiprion akindynos

Barrier Reef Anemonefish is a small coral-reef clownfish from the western Pacific, especially the Great Barrier Reef region. It lives closely with host sea anemones and feeds on plankton, algae, and tiny benthic invertebrates.

Identification points

  • Orange-brown body with three white vertical bars
  • Dark edging on the white bars and fins, especially in juveniles and adults
  • Compact clownfish shape with a rounded head and continuous dorsal fin

Habitat

Shallow tropical coral reefs and lagoonal patch reefs, usually sheltering within the tentacles of host sea anemones in clear, warm, well-lit water.

Bait notes

Not a standard angling species and is rarely targeted. If collected for aquaria, it is taken by net rather than hook and line; no practical bait or lure use applies.

Behavior

Usually found in small family groups with one dominant breeding pair. It stays close to its anemone host, forages in short darts above the reef, and eats zooplankton, algae, and small crustaceans.

Caution

Not normally eaten; small reef clownfishes are poor food-fish candidates and may be subject to local collection controls in some areas. Avoid disturbing anemones, which can sting.

Fishing notes

Not a recreational game fish. In the aquarium trade it should only be sourced legally from sustainable, permitted collection or captive breeding; avoid handling host anemones unnecessarily.
