Sheepshead Minnow

Cyprinodon variegatus

Sheepshead Minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus) is a small, hardy killifish of shallow coastal waters, commonly in marshes, tidal creeks, and salt ponds. It feeds on algae, detritus, tiny crustaceans, and insect larvae, and is more often used as bait or lab fish than targeted by anglers.

Identification points

Small, deep-bodied minnow with a blunt snout and small terminal mouth
Silvery to olive body with irregular dark vertical bars or spots, often stronger on males
Short dorsal fin set far back on the body and a rounded caudal fin

Habitat

Very shallow coastal estuaries, salt marsh pools, tidal creeks, lagoons, and hypersaline ponds; often among Spartina marsh edges, muddy bottoms, and dense vegetation in warm water.

Bait notes

Usually not targeted as a game species. Caught with tiny hooks and bits of shrimp, fish flesh, bread, or dough; also on small saltwater flies, micro-jigs, and fine-mesh traps where legal.

Behavior

Schooling and tolerant of wide salinity swings, it forages by picking algae, biofilm, detritus, and minute invertebrates from vegetation and substrate. It is active in shallow, warm, low-energy water and can concentrate in isolated pools.

Caution

Often lives in polluted coastal marshes, so avoid collecting or eating from contaminated waters. Check local rules before using seine nets, minnow traps, or collecting bait in estuaries.

Fishing notes

Use ultra-light tackle, very small hooks, and minimal weight in shallow marsh edges or pond margins. Slow retrieves and still fishing around vegetation work best; in many places it is better approached as bait collection than sport fishing.
