Identification points

  • Long, slender body with a pointed head and large mouth full of sharp teeth
  • Mottled tan-brown body with dark bars, blotches, and irregular pale spotting
  • Two dorsal fins separated by a gap, with the first fin short and the second longer

Habitat

Shallow tropical coastal waters over sand, rubble, coral margins, lagoons, and seagrass beds, typically on the bottom from the surf zone to reef flats and nearshore slopes.

Bait notes

Will take small strips of fish, shrimp, squid, and cut bait; small jigs and soft plastics worked near bottom can also draw strikes. Not a major sport species, so baits should be kept small and near the substrate.

Behavior

A cryptic benthic predator that lies motionless and lunges at small fish, shrimp, and other crustaceans. It is most active at dawn, dusk, and night, using camouflage to ambush prey.

Caution

Has sharp teeth and a bony mouth, so handle carefully. It is a small predatory reef fish; check local consumption advisories for tropical reef species due to possible ciguatera risk in some areas.

Fishing notes

Fish it with light tackle on the bottom around sandy reef edges, drop-offs, and channels. Slow retrieves, short hops, and dead-sticking near cover are more effective than fast presentations.
