Identification points

  • Small triplefin with three separate dorsal fins
  • Adult males show a dark facial mask contrasting with a brighter body
  • Found tight to shallow rocky substrate with mottled reddish-brown to yellow tones

Habitat

Shallow rocky reefs, boulder fields, caves, and ledges in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean, usually among algae and encrusting growth from the surf zone down to a few tens of meters.

Bait notes

Rarely targeted as a sport fish. If collected or observed incidentally, it responds to very small live or dead crustacean baits, fine bits of shrimp, and micro jigs; small nymph-style lures can draw strikes from territorial fish.

Behavior

Diurnal and site-attached; feeds on tiny benthic crustaceans and other planktonic prey picked from rock surfaces and the water column. Males defend small territories and display vivid breeding colors.

Caution

Handle carefully around rocks and surge; the species is small and not a typical food fish. Local collection rules may apply in marine protected areas, and it is not generally considered a table species.

Fishing notes

Use ultra-light tackle and small hooks around shallow rocky structure, working close to the bottom and into cracks. Best approached with minimal disturbance; many captures are accidental bycatch rather than intentional angling targets.
