European Carp

Cyprinus carpio

European Carp is a large freshwater cyprinid widely introduced worldwide and common in slow rivers, lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. It feeds on bottom-dwelling invertebrates, seeds, detritus, and plant matter, and is a popular angling fish in many regions.

Sweet corn, boilies, pellets, bread, worms, maggots, dough baits, and particles like chickpeas or tiger nuts are effective. Match bait size and flavor to local pressure and water temperature.

Primarily bottom-feeding and most active at dawn, dusk, and during warm stable weather. Carp cruise in groups, root through sediment for food, and become wary in clear or heavily pressured waters.

Notable for strong runs and large size; use a landing net and wet hands to protect the fish. Check local regulations, as carp are managed differently and may be invasive or catch-and-release only in some waters.
