Blackfin Barracuda

Sphyraena qenie

Blackfin barracuda is a large, streamlined predatory fish of Indo-Pacific reefs and offshore slopes. It is mostly a solitary ambush hunter, feeding on smaller fish and occasionally cephalopods, and is valued more as a game fish than a table fish.

识别要点

  • Slender, torpedo-shaped body with a pointed head and very large mouth
  • Dark banding or dusky bars on a silvery-gray body, especially in younger fish
  • Two separated dorsal fins and a deeply forked tail typical of barracudas

栖息地

Tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific waters around reefs, drop-offs, lagoons, channels, and outer reef slopes; juveniles may use sheltered inshore areas, while adults often patrol deeper reef edges and open-water drop-offs.

饵料备注

Best on live baitfish such as pilchards, sardines, mullet, herrings, and small fusiliers where legal. Troll small minnows or metal spoons, or cast fast-retrieved stickbaits and jerkbaits near reef edges and bait schools.

行为

An aggressive visual predator that ambushes schooling baitfish, often cruising alone or in loose groups. It is most active around current edges, structure, and low-light periods, striking fast moving prey.

注意事项

Sharp teeth can inflict serious cuts; use a long-handled tool and keep hands clear of the mouth. As a large reef predator, it may pose ciguatera risk in some areas, so local consumption advisories should be checked before eating.

钓法备注

Use strong leaders because of sharp teeth and sudden runs. Slow trolling, drifting live baits along reef drop-offs, and casting to surface-feeding activity are effective; avoid lingering a hooked fish near the boat or rocks.
